Foster care is in crisis in Nevada, and across the nation, as the number of children placed into foster care in the state, due much in part to the opioid epidemic that is strangling Nevada families. Along with this, the horrors of human trafficking also continue to challenge Nevada’s foster care system, as well.
On Friday and Saturday, October 5th and 6th, leading foster care, adoption, and child welfare expert Dr. John DeGarmo will be speaking at the two day workshop, sponsored by Mountain Circle Family Services, Inc. The event will be located at the Grand Sierra Hotel, 2500 E 2nd St, Reno, NV 89595, and is possible through the support of the Terry Lee Wells Foundation. Foster and adoptive parents, case workers, and child welfare advocates from across the state will be attending this important event, and hearing from leading international foster care, adoption, and parenting expert Dr. John DeGarmo. Dr. John DeGarmo is the founder and director of The Foster Care Institute, and conducts seminars across the world on foster care, child sex trafficking, adoption, and child welfare related issues. He has appeared on CNN HLN, Good Morning America, FOX, NBC, CBS, and PBS stations across the nation. He is also the author of several books, including the new book The Foster Care Survival Guide, and Helping Foster Children in School. Dr. DeGarmo is the parent of 6 children, including adopting three from foster care, and has been a foster parent to over 55 children.
Dr. DeGarmo will be speaking on issues of the increasing dangers of social media and online technology for children in foster care (that often lead to human trafficking), trauma for children in foster care, issues of feelings of grief and loss for foster parents, and the opioid crisis that is crippling the state and nation. He will be available to talk with reporters about the foster care crisis in the Reno area, and throughout the entire state throughout the morning and afternoon.
